Bircher muesli

The grated apple and kefir in bircher muesli can help settle your tummy

Suffering from loose stools? Try this. The pectin in the grated apples provides lots of surface area to help bind the stool. The nuts and seeds will be easier to digest because they have been soaked. The bacteria in the kefir or yoghurt can settle your stomach. Give it a try - and don’t drink coffee with it if you have chronic loose stools as coffee is a laxative!

Ingredients

MAKES ABOUT 3 SERVINGS

125g/1 1⁄3 cup oats
2 squeezed oranges
400ml Greek yoghurt or fermented milk kefir

1 tbsp ground flaxseeds
1 tbsp chopped walnuts
1 apple, cored and grated

Handful of pomegranate seeds (optional) Splash of apple juice (optional)

Instructions

Combine all the ingredients in a bowl, stir, and place, covered over- night, in your fridge until you want to spoon out a serving.

This will keep well in the fridge for 2–3 days, but if the mixture is a bit stiff (which can happen if you use thick Greek yoghurt instead of kefir, which is a bit thinner), then stir in a splash of apple juice.
